Tree Giveaway

Sanctuary Steward Deedra Raiford (L) discussing planting and care with Georgia Osten

Due to heavy rains the weekend prior, dozens of High Island, Crystal Beach and Bolivar folks flocked to Smith Oaks Sanctuary in High Island on Saturday, Feb. 11th. The Houston Audubon Society along with Apache Tree Foundation sponsored a free tree give-away. Pictured is Sanctuary Steward Deedra Raiford, a recent graduate of Stephen F. Austin Forestry Management. Deedra is answering questions about the sanctuary and directing people to the many available trees on site. This beautiful sanctuary is located off Highway 124. Live oaks by the truck loads were carried off to be…planted on the peninsula. This tree giveaway is an effort to re-create the natural habitat for birds on the peninsula, damaged by Hurricane Ike. Volunteers assisted with sign-in, tree selection and loading.

Deedra also reminded us of the upcoming birding events, daily walks, field trips and identification workshops closer to the end of March. If you have never visited the sanctuary, plan to stop by on your next pass through High Island.

Since 2006, the Apache Tree Foundation has awarded trees to more than 250 non-profit organizations across 14 states including schools, cities, counties, parks, universities, cemeteries, homeowner associations, baseball associations, soccer associations, youth associations, Boy Scout troops, wildlife refuges and community non-profits.
