Creepy Crawlers

By Georgia Osten
I was going to Galveston this weekend anyway to shop at Tom’s Thumb, but someone told me about Joe’s Country Store – in Santa Fe on their website, in LaMarque on my phone directions! Either way, I got lost because of all the construction on I-45 (what a mess)! Of course, I picked one of the coldest Spring days ever. As I went downstairs to get in my car, that darned wind hit me full force. I turned around from the car and came back into the house to find a sweatshirt.

Joe’s was a little out of my price range, but I can’t wait to go back, they had some really fun stuff like pots and tons of vegetables and flowers. It’s right by the WalMart in LaMarque so I took care of that part of my shopping. I found the most beautiful bougainvillea to replace the ones that froze out by my pool. Next stop, Home Depot in Galveston.

So, Sunday, I was planting some of my stuff, carrying some big plants to where they’re going to be planted. Yep, I’m admiring where they’re going to go as I sit here at my computer writing this story.

The creepy part – I’m getting to that …

As I was going back for another plant on the picnic tables downstairs, something tickled my neck. I instinctively reached back to remove whatever it was and lo & behold if a little gecko didn’t jump off me and land on the concrete, running for his life. He looked like he was missing his tail. Well, I thought, “isn’t that just wonderful!” I figured I’d better go on upstairs and change because, no doubt, his tail was still on me. Yep, as I stripped out of my sweatshirt, the tail fell out on the floor still twitching.

I know it’s Karma! What goes around comes around. I can’t possibly tell you what I used to do to a gecko when I would accidentally find one. You would think I deserve whatever that gecko did to me! They are my absolute most unfavorite creatures. Well maybe not, snakes are at the top of the list.

So, all this gardening stuff is enjoyable but come Monday, I’m greatly relieved to go to my desk and just sit all day. I’ve contacted Jorge, I call him George, to come weed my gardens and plant my new stuff and spread mulch. “You Got It,” he says. I’ll be so happy when “he gets it!”

You must always be on the lookout for creepy crawlers!
