Driftwood Gumbo cooks do it again for charity

gumbo00Saturday, April 26th, the place to be was the 3rd Annual Driftwood Charity Gumbo Cook-Off! Tents were spread all over Wayne and Diane Blanks’ property in Driftwood Subdivision. As the drinks flowed and the Port Arthur Playboys rocked on, fourteen teams competed in some of the best darned gumbo you’ve ever sunk your teeth into. There was seafood gumbo with oysters, shrimp, crab and crawfish. There were some with okra and some with actual crab bodies and crab claws. Of course, there was the ever-popular chicken and sausage gumbo. Each tent offered an abundance of samples complete with rice, green onions and gumbo filé.

My favorite was a seafood gumbo made by a good friend of mine with chunks of crab meat and shrimp. Now that one, Cher, had to be followed by a bottle of ice cold water also provided by the chef extraordinaire! The judges deliberated for quite some time, going back and forth on their decision, but by about 4pm, the winner was announced.

Jimmy and Barbara Trahan and his group of cooks won First Place, George and the Sistahs Gumbo Team won Second Place, and Mitch Bittle took Third Place. This being a charity event, Jimmy and Barbara decided to award the winnings to Bolivar Peninsula Community Outreach. They are excited to be able to present the check to them in the amount of $3,536. Congrats to the Trahans.
