Fat Tuesday – Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler

By Georgia Osten
We decided to “sit it out” this year. Instead of driving in the Mardi Gras Parade and throwing beads, we caught beads instead on the side-lines. We usually drive in the parade while PawPaw takes pictures from the side of the road. We had 3 of the 8 grands with us, The Middles! It was their first time to come with us to the parade. Not knowing what to expect, they were a bit antsy before the parade started. I gave them a $20 to go over to Swede’s to buy some treats, which satisfied them for a bit. They had their scooters so they were riding all over Hwy. 87 like wild Indians. When they saw the parade coming toward us, the excitement ebbed, they had no idea what to expect.

Oh, how thrilling catching beads! They wanted to wear every bead they caught. Finally, the sheer weight of beads was overwhelming and they ditched those around their necks and placed them in their own chairs, not to get mixed up with each other. Ah, fresh necks, so much more room …

Vicky drove the Crab Fest Raffle Golf Cart in the parade with her sister and niece. They stopped half way at the Chamber where we were waiting to load them up with more beads and koozies.

The parade was over way too soon. Thank goodness, Carlis handed us Keep Bolivar Beautiful bags, so the kids had their own bags to get their bounties home.

Next, we were off to our second destination for the rest of the weekend. Off to Friendswood to take care of The Littles, now we had 6!.

Oh, what a fun-packed weekend, it seems we’re never at a loss for something to do.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you. Email: [email protected]
