Surface water temperature was back up to 80 degrees, water clarity very good for the most part. We were able to fish near and off the shore reefs this week, and both areas produced very good catches of trout, reds, and a few black drum on our artificial lure trips in the 5-to-6-foot depth range. Once we find the active fish, they are normally only on a small section of the reef. We also targeted wind protected mud flats with scattered shell around pinch points with current and nervous bait, with great success in the 2.5-to-3-foot depth range.
Shrimp imitation lures with Fish Smack popping corks, with 14” – 18” leaders have still been producing the most bites for our anglers, resulting in great success on our chartered trips. On our live bait trips, live shrimp have produced consistently, and provided plenty of line tugging action for our fishing clients, fished under a popping cork and 24” leaders producing the most consistent bites. Looking forward to fishing after the first cold front as conditions continue to improve.
