Mary Raney Meditation Garden

By Linda Elissalde
Mary Raney was diagnosed with numerous cancers in 2018. One prognosis decreed that she had only 18 months to live-a prediction that was so wrong. With her belief, “Nothing shall separate me from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord,” Mary placed her health in the hands of good physicians and her faith in the hands of God. She cheerfully continued to use her talents in contributions for the well being of family, church associates, multiple friends and anyone in need. Mary passed away April 1, 2022.

It seemed only fitting that a special place should be created and dedicated to honor such an outstanding woman. This memorial needed to exemplify Mary’s generous spirit, faith and love. What would be suitable? President of Bay Vue Methodist Women ( BVMW) Elinor Tinsley collaborated with other members and made a plan. Mary was an excellent gardener who gave freely of her produce. If there were left overs from Sunday Fellowship Food she packed it up to share not only with shut-ins, but also birds that made homes in her numerous trees. Mary enjoyed entertaining in her lovely yard. A decision was made. Mary was to have a special garden. Donations in her memory and money from BVMW covered the cost.

Elinor and Pat Tinsley discovered Sam’s Creations of San Antonio. This place created a beautiful bench with Mary’s name in the middle and colorful stones to surround the area. The Tinsleys drove to San Antonio to bring back these artistic designs. A spot was chosen in front of Bay Vue Methodist Church. The hard work of implementation was done by Elinor, Pat, Sandi Covington, Marsha and Moody Fredenburg. An arbor was added. Caladiums and Jasmine are now blooming. Peggy Martin roses will be added upon arrival.

Saturday, June 3, welcomed over 40 people to the dedication of this unique garden at Bay Vue Methodist Church. It would be followed by a delicious reception. Elinor welcomed Raney family members and friends. Several had arrived from out of town. Pastor Valerie Hudson spoke of Mary’s goodness, love, generosity and faith. Surely Mary was watching when her great-grandson Luke helped cut the ribbon that officially opened MARY RANEY MEDITATION GARDEN.

And Jesus said, “Well done, thou good and faithful Servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the kingdom of Heaven.”

The power of God is amazing! We have so much to be joyful and thankful for!! My mother couldn’t be a better life teacher I should have learned more! We don’t know the Why’s, we do know the Who! Can’t be more grateful to the Crystal Beach Methodist Church, I’ve stayed away because I thought it would be too painful to be in church without her! I was wrong! A small stitch began to put my heart back together! So I will not stay away from the things she loved above all else is her God and her church!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
