Mother Nature

GO_0701By Georgia Osten
What an unusual year we’re having. The cold was beyond cold this winter. It seemed to last forever, we thought we would never see the warm weather. Ah, the warm weather is why most of us ended up here in the first place. A lot of us don’t know any different, we grew up here. It’s getting to be back where we’re used to – the balmy, sweaty weather we love. The breezes are beyond belief. Just go on down under the house, in the shade and feel the goodness.

Here’s where I was going, as I got lost in the wonderful-ness of where we live. Where I work, I get a lot of calls about things, some silly, some rude, some disturbed. One silly call I can remember is about camping – “do you have tides?” Most questions about camping – “is camping allowed?” The answer is “yes, primitive.” As we all know, Crystal Beach does not have showers and there are only a few porta-potties scattered here and there. Of course, that doesn’t stop them from coming over your dunes to do their business. Oops, didn’t mean to go there.

My most annoying question lately is about seaweed. Yes, it does get scraped weekly, yes, it’s coming in constantly, yes, it stinks. A common comment to my honest answers is “Well, I guess I just won’t come down then.” Well, guess what, it’s not stopping a heck of a lot of people from coming down! Why this bothers me personally, is because I see “my” beach, “our” beaches constantly raped (I mean scraped). I see the erosion, do you? Nature happens, there’s plenty to find in all that seaweed. Maybe it’s Nature’s way of trying to build up our beaches?

Let me see, I think I’ll put in a special note to “The Mother of All Nature” and ask her.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
