Oh, What a Night, The Jersey Boys

What were the choices for boys born on the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey during the 1960s? It seems there were three. You could become a big star like Frank Sinatra, join the army or go to jail. Spending a little time in jail convinced some guys that becoming a star was the best option. THE JERSEY BOYS is about those young men. Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons had hit song after hit song during the 1960s. The group, who went through many name changes before deciding on The Four Seasons, was the source of a hit Broadway musical named THE JERSEY BOYS. It tells the story of success, and failure, while including all of their wonderful tunes throughout the show.

Most stage musicals do not translate well to the big screen. However, this one does. Director Clint Eastwood did it right. The actors, the songs, and the sets provide the same excitement as a stage production. When we saw the movie, we wanted to sing along with all those wonderful songs. Hits such as “Sherry”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, and “My Eyes Adored You” are just a few of the offerings. Many folk in the theater quietly sang or hummed along.

All good shows need grand finales. THE JERSEY BOYS delivers again with its closing number “Oh, What A Night!” (Doesn’t everyone remember a special night?) On departing the movie, several audience members sheepishly stared at each other as they rendered that song. So what if all the young folk entering the complex looked askance at we more mature people. THE JERSEY BOYS provided a delicious movie treat! “Oh, What A Night!”
