Rain Dance

By Georgia Osten
As I sit here and try to write something positive, I must tell you the skies are looking a bit gray. I look at the weather every day, but I don’t think I looked this morning. Instead, this morning, I got ready for my appointment at the DMV in Galveston to renew my Driver’s License. First, I thought I was going to have to park illegally because there were no places to park. I could have parked over at the Animal Shelter, but there’s a big ditch between the two. So, I circled until someone left and I snagged their space. When I got into the building, there were two people in front of me. Each one was turned away because they hadn’t made an appointment. Thank goodness I went online to google the address. That’s where I saw the appointment schedule and the documentation I needed to bring with me.

No problem, I found my passport, Social Security Card and Birth Certificate. Even though I had an appointment, I waited about 30 minutes for my turn, the room was packed, I got the last seat. Piece of cake, Line #2 of 2 called me up. I presented my passport and my application, got my picture taken and read the eye chart. My application stated where I was born and “#2” questioned that. “Born in Japan?” Uh Oh, now what? I just answered “yes.” And there was no other discussion about my birthplace. I was prepared to go into a lifelong story about why I was born in Japan. No other questions, I guess I passed! Wondering what I would do if they confiscated my license, I guess I’d be getting home via Uber.

When I got to work, my boss asked me if I passed. I told him how easy it was. Now, you folks out there can celebrate the fact that all the Old Coots on the road are safe to drive. Just give us lots of space!

This weather, right? A recent DNA test told me I’m not a Native Indian at all contrary to what I’ve believed all my life. I might try a rain dance anyway. I saw on the news last week; we had already gone 42 days without rain. That’s absurd! My plants are really suffering. We went to Home Depot on Sunday after church, my husband dropped me off at the Garden entrance, but I promised myself I wouldn’t/didn’t need to buy any plants. In fact, after the two jasmines died out by the pool, I told myself I wouldn’t be putting anything out there again next summer. So, as promises go, I broke down and bought a couple of plants to replace some of the bedraggled things suffering around my back deck. I also bought some bougainvillea’s for the pots out by the pool. Bougainvillea’s are supposed to be able to stand any amount of sun! We’ll see …

If it’s raining tomorrow and you happen to drive by my house, please try to ignore this Crazy, I’ll be out there dancing and rejoicing with the rest of my yard.

We’ll ALL be smiling!
