The most important Lighthouse

By Linda Elissalde
Bolivar’s famous lighthouse was once considered, “The most important lighthouse west of the Mississippi”. While it is no longer used to light ships safely into harbor, it still stands as a monument of strength and bravery. Descendants of those who sheltered inside during past hurricanes speak of it with reverence.

Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation (BPCF) is aware of the importance of this national treasure. The organization had 3 ft. and 6 ft. replicas made of the lighthouse. Most have been purchased. BPCF also held a LIGHT UP BOLIVAR campaign to show community pride. Officers recently visited Galveston County Commissioner’s Court and presented a 3ft. painted lighthouse to the newly reopened Galveston County Museum. County Commissioner Joe Giusti graciously welcomed the ladies.

BPCF representatives were so impressed with the Galveston County Museum that a field trip is already planned for November. Please contact Elinor Tinsley if you wish to join this enterprising group. Membership is $20 for single, couple or two adults in the same house. Elinor may be reached by text or phone (713-256-3447) or email to [email protected]. Include your name and phone number.

Galveston County Museum was established in 1976. It maintains a collection of artifacts, research archives and an exhibit hall featuring stories from Galveston County’s past. Now it has the unique addition of Port Bolivar’s Lighthouse. “THE MOST IMPORTANT LIGHTHOUSE WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI”
