It’s gonna be OK

(Feb-14-2012) This past October Ted and I drove to the Atlanta, Ga., area for several reunions of family, friends, a large church group, and my high school class gathering. These annual meetings are getting more precious by the year as many of our family members are getting up in age, some suffering health issues, and many deaths seem to have happened in the past three years. My high school classmates and I have a three-day reunion because so many travel now from so far to be present. We have more fun than the law allows, but never get into serious trouble of any kind.

Normally we rent a state park and have found that these locations meet our needs nicely. We have the conference center…

The Primary Election date is in “limbo”

The primary election date is a “moving target” given all the litigation related to redistricting. There are no less than three Federal Courts involved! For more information, go to GalvestonVotes.org.

(Feb-13-2012) I look at your web site each day and really like the new format. Our family has gone to Bolivar each summer for over 60 years. It’s nice to be able to keep up with events there.

Bolivar Sand Dunes

Letter to Honorable Patrick Doyle, Commissioner, Precinct 1.

(Feb-11-2012) Commissioner Doyle: The MAIN cause of Thursday’s horrible accident that killed the 3 year old boy was that the County’s Dunes are too close to the water. FEMA and the County got most of the front row lots after ‘Ike’, the put the dunes back where they were before the hurricane when beach was lost. Now, with high tides and southeast winds the Gulf is at the bottom of the dunes, which is a normal condition. All the dunes need to be moved BACK 75′ so the road where the family was walking isn’t next to the dunes. After ‘Ike’ the County put the blue trash cans in the middle(or closer to the beach) of the washed out beach, then proceeded to build the dunes 50′ from the water at low tide! Please move the dunes back so we continue to have a useable, not dangerous, beach. Thank You and feel free to contact me on this matter.

Never far from Crystal Beach

(Feb 11-2012) My folks and I are having coffee at their place in rural Florida, looking at the neighbor’s cattle in the next field. With a wistful sigh I exhale that by this time next week we’ll be spying both cattle and coast over our morning coffee–and oil platforms and barges if we feel like it, too. I am full aware how lucky we are on Bolivar. My Yankee parents chose country fields over sand beaches, knowing it couldn’t be both. But I had the good sense to marry a Texan whose family has long, deep ties to East Texas, and the peninsula in particular.

“I wonder what’s going on at Crystal Beach,” says my dad. “Didn’t you say we’d be arriving for Mardi Gras? Get on the computer and let’s take a look.”

Now why hadn’t I thought of that? Held hostage at the office, I’ve often clicked on a Crystal Beach webcam to check out the waves.

We take a long look at the webcams and Crystal Beach Local News, clicking the links to see what’s going on and getting all excited about the Bolivar Mardi Gras parade festivities. “Never far from Crystal Beach,” he says, looking at my faraway stare. I smile. “Not close enough yet, Dad, but soon.” (Rene Gedaly)

Sand Dunes

(Feb-10-2012) The horrible accident (child killed by rolling log) near Monkhouse Thursday afternoon is ANOTHER reason the County should move the dunes off of the BEACH and not reclaim the lots those folks were forced to sell. That family was walking down the road which has to run beside the dunes. At high tides with wind there is NO BEACH or road! Remember how funny it looked when they put out the blue trash barrels 75+ YARDS away from the eroded lots after Ike and since have been building dunes out that far? MOVE THE DUNES BACK before this happens again! (Don Harbuck)

The program also assists these personnel in adapting these newly developed skills to their new abilities. Adaptive kayaks, kayaking accessories…

A Valentine for your Sailor

A valentine for your sailor(Feb-7-2012) With February being one of the coldest months of the year, it is time to bring some warmth into your home. Think about repainting a room a sunny yellow. Yellow is one of the few colors that almost any other color goes with. Think of it as a neutral color. When you are choosing yellow, find the color you love and go two shades lighter. Yellow is one of the few colors that intensify when put on your wall. One of the colors I like for the tamer at heart is (Sherwin Williams) SW6687 Lantern Light. If you have more adventure in your color choices, SW6908 Fun Yellow or SW6688 Solaria are great choices. Remember wall color is always…

Playing with home field advantage

Playing with home field advantage(Feb-7-2012) For several years of my Christian life, I wrestled with what God would have me to do concerning reaching others. I had heard sermons and read material teaching that I should be a witness for Him, and that if I really loved Him, as I should, I would be eager to talk to folks about their eternal souls. I wasn’t. I was chicken. I was downright petrified. I was fearful that I would offend and possibly lose a friendship that I valued. Because of my work, I knew many different kinds of people and my family members were pretty much like me and not into church things. Not being reared in a Christian home with strong moral values, I did not feel I was insulated and protected from the world in which I lived, and I knew that the folks I knew best were not going to be eager to hear the gospel especially from me.

No more sleepless Sunday nights

(Feb-7-2012) As I sit here casually playing Words with Friends, or writing my Sand Bucket, or talking with my kids on the phone, I realize just how relaxed my life has become. Normally, on a Sunday evening, I would begin thinking about waking up early on Monday morning to make it back to Sugar Land to drop Ruby at our ‘city home’ and get ready for work. Anticipating the dreaded trip away from the beach, Sunday night was never a good night’s sleep (even at the beach). Years of working on the other side of Houston, I remember thinking as I parked my car and walked in, “I’ve been doing this for twenty years, walking the

A Story of Death and Taxes
by Don Poole

Update (Feb-08-2012): An attorney from Iowa has contacted the Galveston County Delinquent Attorney concerning Suzanne Grant. He knew her and will contact her family members to inform them of the proceeds that are awaiting their claim. The local attorney was told that the Iowa attorney learned of the Excess Funds from an Iowa newspaper. Congratulations to all who helped.

Everyone knows that there are two things that we cannot escape – death and taxes. This is a story about how both death and taxes are costing the surviving family members of a Crystal Beach owner more than $20,000.

On June 28, 2005, Erma Taylor sold Lot 13 of Cloon Subdivision Section 5 to Suzanne M. Grant of 5108 Huisache Drinve in Bellaire, Texas. The property, located at 847 Sea Spray Drive, had a house assessed for $ 96,440. Ms. Grant did not enjoy her beach home for very long, she died on July 13, 2008 at age 64.

While Ms. Grant was spared the ordeal of Hurricane Ike, the same cannot be said of her beach house. Probably destroyed by the storm, the lot was assessed as vacant property in 2009 by the…
