A Valentine for your Sailor

A valentine for your sailor(Feb-7-2012) With February being one of the coldest months of the year, it is time to bring some warmth into your home. Think about repainting a room a sunny yellow. Yellow is one of the few colors that almost any other color goes with. Think of it as a neutral color. When you are choosing yellow, find the color you love and go two shades lighter. Yellow is one of the few colors that intensify when put on your wall. One of the colors I like for the tamer at heart is (Sherwin Williams) SW6687 Lantern Light. If you have more adventure in your color choices, SW6908 Fun Yellow or SW6688 Solaria are great choices. Remember wall color is always…a backdrop to the rest of your room. Do not be overwhelmed by the color in a room without furnishings. That is always a shock at first! What better color for the beach that reminds us of the beauty of a sunny day!

A valentine for your sailorOne of my favorite enhancements to a room is a built-in daybed. I have one in my living room next to my fireplace and it has become a favorite place for my grandchildren to relax and fight over who gets to sleep there at night. This daybed, with built-in bookshelves would make this a favorite place to curl up with a book or to just take a nap. A great place for a built-in daybed would also be in a guest room under a window. Extra storage can be built on either side and it would make a great place for small children to sleep in the same room with their parents. Be creative as to where in your home you can build one. Mine has drawers in the front and a removable panel for storage in the back. Guess where all my Christmas decorations are stored?

Valentine’s Day is next week so our “HOW TO” today is to make a beautiful wreath for your front door. A valentine for your sailor This project is easy with the plentiful Oyster shells on our beach. Use your friend E6000 glue after laying out the shells in a heart shape. Overlap each one slightly and then embellish with other shells, seaglass, or anything that would fit in with your exterior décor. A red piece of cording instead of the blue shown for Valentines would “seal the deal”. I have found out the best way to hang a wreath on a door in this windy area is to use a regular over the door wreath hanger and then use one of the large clear plastic suction cup hooks that you can find in many craft stores. To make sure your wreath hangs well, you may want to wrap a plastic tie around the top area so the hook has a good anchor. I kept my Christmas Wreath anchored without any movement until way after New Years. Enjoy this project for either your exterior door or inside your home.

Keep those comments coming. I really enjoy hearing from you.

Have fun and remember…any day at the beach is a good day!

Live for the warmth of the sun on your face, the sand in between your toes and the taste of saltwater on your lips.
