BBQ Cookoff for PBVFD

The Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department BBQ Cookoff celebrated its 23rd year this weekend, beating the August heat and enjoying the festivities in June this year. Twenty-two teams competed to raise funds for the fire department operations. The event began on Friday night with a winner-takes-all Fajita Contest. Saturday morning warmed up as the cook teams fired up their pits to prepare food for the categories of brisket, ribs, chicken, and beans. Many teams also competed in the renowned Bloody Mary contest including creative concoctions of juice, spirits, and veggies. Congratulations to Dorothy and Bonita Comeaux who defended their title and won again this year.

While a silent auction was busy collecting interest, visitors enjoyed BBQ plates prepared by the fire department cooks. Teams of judges selected for each category had a tough time narrowing down their selections from the prepared entries. And at 6pm, “Big Daddy” Flanagan started the live auction with over 50 donated items bringing in thousands of dollars for the VFD. Throughout the auction, team winners were announced …

Thanks to all the sponsors, cook teams, auction bidders, and visitors. We’ll see you again next year!
