Driftwood Gumbo Charity Cook Off

The Second Annual Driftwood Gumbo Charity Cook Off was a huge success despite the looming approach of thunderstorms. Canopies were arranged on Friday, April 26th, the party crowds anticipating a day of socializing, tasting and fantastic music. Nine teams were stationed and cooking by 6 am on Saturday, and crowds were already gathering by 10 am. The smell of gumbo filled the air when the Port Arthur Playboys started playing. As tradition will have it, Randy Choate of Beaumont cooked up and served an authentic Cajun smoked chicken, sausage, and okra gumbo served over potato salad. Kokomo’s Flip Flop Bar of Driftwood Subdivision cooked and served up a ragin’ seafood gumbo, complete with crawfish, shrimp, and whole crabs. The Texas Crab Festival Golf Cart was prominately displayed as Sid Jackson sold raffle tickets, t-shirts, caps and koozies. Judges Bob Wortham, Jim Vratis, and our own Judge Pat Vondra made their decision and the winners were announced by 4 pm. The winning team selects a charity to receive the proceeds.
