First Day of School

By Georgia Osten
I hope it was exciting for all and I hope today is a little better after the initial shock! I remember all the preparations: the school supply list, the back to school clothes shopping, and especially, the bad case of jitters my kids used to get on that first day. Although no one could really sleep well, everyone had to turn in early the night before – as if you’re really going to keep that up … A good breakfast in the morning – as if you’re really going to keep that up … All good intentions.

Milestones this year for me: My oldest granddaughter’s first day of High School and my youngest granddaughter’s first day of Kindergarten. In between are my grandsons, the 7th grader, Pre-Schooler, and the 6-month old being “home schooled.”

My youngest child, Mom of 3, reminded me of a funny tradition that has been passed down and around. I think it was her first day of Middle School, and I packed her lunch, just as I did for her all through High School. I have quirky ways of doing things that she has adopted, it embarrasses her, but it has stuck. One of my quirks, among many, I used to wrap her sandwich or apples or can of coke in aluminum foil, thinking it would help keep everything cooler. Her classmates sitting around the lunch table at school would tease her relentlessly, but she would logically explain to them the necessity of aluminum foil.

Anyway, on the first day of school, I decided to put a note in her lunch on a yellow sticky cut in the shape of a heart. My first thought was to put it in the sandwich, but then realizing she would probably take a bite out of the paper, I decided to put it outside the foil and inside the sandwich baggy. Tradition – “things that stick”

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
