Fishing Report for Rollover Pass, April 2-9, 2012

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Summary: This past week provided good action for specks, reds, flounder, and drum but silting and weedy tides soon put a damper on the bite. But clearing tides on Easter weekend improved the bite with night lighters filling their boxes with specks from 3 to 9 lbs with daytime flounder bites giving up 2 to 5 lb’ers. The predictions for this coming week are excellent for all species.

Speckled Trout-Nightime is fast becoming the right time for trout anglers who are lighting up and boxing some great action with some awesome specks to 9lbs. Daytime action is also heating up for specks in the cut as well as in the surf. Soft and hard plastics are best with shrimp and finger mullet doing well. Hard plastics and spoons best bet for surf action. (Size and Limits-15inches to 25inches for 10 specks with one 25incher per day when added as part of the daily limit)

Redfish-Fair to good reds to 28inches with some bulls to 38inches coming in for anglers fishing cut-baits, shrimp, or finger mullet. (Size and Limits- 20inches to 28inches for 3 reds- with one over 28inches when tagged in addition to the 3 fish daily slot-limit)

Flounder-Good early spring run of flounder from 2 to 5 lbs coming in for Gulp and bait anglers fishing bayside bulkheads and rollover bay. (Size and Limits- 14inches minimum for 5 flounder per day)

Black Drum-Very good keeper eater drum to 24 inches being caught on squid, shrimp, fresh crab, and cut-baits- REMEMBER- ALL drum under 14inces and over 30inches MUST be released- NO TAGGING- (Limits- 5 per day at 15-30 inches)

Sheepshead-A few sheepshead coming in on fiddlers, shrimp, and cut-bait. (Size and Limits-15 inches minimum with 5 allowed per day)

Sand/Gulf Trout – Slow. (No Limits)

Whiting/Croaker- Some croaker in cut but some really nice bull whiting hitting shrimp in surf.(No Limits)
