Fishing Report & Tide Chart For Rollover Pass, TX July 2 – July 9, 2012

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Summary- The first of the week provided the best trout action so far this year before slowing due to another onslaught of seaweed. But despite the adverse conditions, including a midnight squall with a mini-tsunami blowing over night gear, anglers still connected with some excellent night and day fishing action at the pass.

Speckled Trout– EXCELLENT night time action under lights with fair to good day time action.  Surf waders were stringing the larger trout but were, at times, being harassed by hungry sharks munching on their stringers. So, beware waders. (Size and Limits; 15 inches to 25 inches for 10 specks with one 25 incher per day when added as part of the daily limit)

Redfish– Fair to good with lots of rat reds being caught and released.  Nice keeper sized reds to 28 inches were also caught on cracked crab or finger mullet. (Size and Limits; 20 inches to 28 inches for 3 reds, with one over 28 inches when tagged in addition to the 3 fish daily slot-limit)

Flounder– Fair flounder action on bay side with bulkhead anglers and bay waders picking up flounder on Gulps, finger mullet, or mud minnows. (Size and Limits; 14 inches minimum for 5 flounder per day)

Black Drum- Good drum action with anglers catching plenty of keeper eaters to 20 inches.  REMEMBER, ALL drum under 14 inches and over 30 inches MUST be released. NO TAGGING. (Size and Limits; 5 per day at 15-30 inches)

GAFF-TOP SLOW with some nice runs of gaffs coming in at night. Intracoastal canal best bet withsquid best bait. (Size and Limits; 14inch minimum, no creel limit)

Sand/Gulf Trout -Some nice sized sand trout beginning to show in cut. (No limits)

Whiting/Croaker– Good whiting and croaker action with some really nice golden croaker to 13 inches showing up. (No Limits)

Crabbing -Good crabbing for those who enjoy. (Size and Limits; Blue crab must be 5inches across carapace (point-to-point) no creel limits. BUT ALL SPONGE CRABS (egged females) MUST BE RELEASED)

Stone Crabs- largest claw is kept ONLY if two are present- kept claw must be 2-1/2 inches from the knuckle.

Shark – Mostly small tips showing up in surf with some larger 5 ft and 7 ft shark in the surf reported by wade anglers who had fish stringers stripped. (Size and Limits; 1 at 24inches)
