Following George

George Throop began his walk across America from Vancouver, Washington 996 days ago, back in September 2009, two days before his 34th birthday. “Walk across America” is George’s effort to advocate for healthier lifestyles, “It’s a walk of inspiration”. George lost his mother to cancer. She died in 1985 two days before her 34th birthday.

We were thrilled to meet him on his visit through Crystal Beach in January of this year (Crystal Beach Local News, “Enjoy The Walk”, Jan 30). He told us that he hoped to end his walk in Fall 2012 and “it would be grand if President Obama would walk the last 20 minutes with him.”

Pictured is George on his way through “Sweet Home Alabama” on the front of The Greenville Advocate. Ah, Greenville, Alabama … again, I’m reminded of Forrest Gump (Greenville Advocate, “Man takes steps to prevent cancer”, June 8).

In a recent exchange on Facebook, George states:
“I’d like to reach the White House by October, but I’m not etching that arrival time in stone. There’s a chance I could meet him (Obama) before then too, perhaps in North Carolina. Admittedly, as much as I’d love to (meet Obama), I’m simply aiming high at the finish because I can (and should).”

And his view regarding whether or not he’ll be walking with any Obamas in D.C.:
“If Obama walks with me in D.C., it will make for the end of an excellent experience walking across America. If Obama does not walk with me in D.C., it will make for the end of an excellent experience walking across America. Basically, whatever happens, I’m setting myself up to finish that last mile with a great big smile on my face =D”
