It’s time to go

By Georgia Osten
A bit over two years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday – retirement! A wonderful reason to retire – “it’s time to go.” Not because you hated your job, on the contrary, I loved my job, I loved the people. My husband and I retired pretty much at the same time. Actually, he retired one month before me … I lingered. I literally “hung out.” The house sold thank goodness, but it sold and closed about a month before I was through with my job. We already had the beach house, so weekends weren’t a problem. My lovely daughter let me stay at her house in League City for the last month. My own bedroom and bath, I couldn’t have asked for a more comfortable, loving place to stay.

Long story short, we moved down to the beach permanently by the end of August. Life was good to begin with, we went fishing, strolling on the beach, riding on the beach, stuff like that. Winter came. A little bored I got. A job came up at the Chamber, Lucy was having her second child and she wanted to stay home, “been there, done that.” I told everyone, “What a great job this would be,” trying to convince the perfect person to apply. Finally, I convinced myself “what a great job this would be.” I was fortunate enough to land the job. Just 4 hours a day, I get to get out of the house, I get to see lots of people, lots of phone calls, crazy calls, crazy questions. My co-worker, Sherry, and I are going to write a book on the bizarre questions we get.

So, what I’m trying to say is that I’m busier now than I’ve ever been. Even when I had a full time job, even when I worked my full time job and worked a second job at Foley’s selling shoes. I love this life! I’m looking forward to some down time as the holidays approach, being with family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is what it’s all about, family and friends and keeping your mind active (or cluttered).

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
