Kara Kurtz weds Chance Kraft 10-12-2013

This is “another one” of those 5 years later stories, except more precisely 5 years and 1 month later. A little more than 10 years ago, Kara Kurtz became my best friend in Bolivar. She, her father Norbert and brother Kenan moved here from Houston in 2001 and operated the Bait Camp at the Ferry Landing. For a while, they also had a Bait Camp at Seivers. It was a glorious time with unbelievably jumbo shrimp selling for $5/pound. Cold beer, soda, snacks, bait, and friends, new and old stopped in, with stories to tell, new and old. My daughter Gina went to the old Bolivar school for a while with Kenan. When she and I adopted a kitten from Kara (we still have him), it seemed like we all had been friends forever. We later evacuated together to Austin during Hurricane Rita in 2005, returning happily.

Five years ago, it was a different ending when Hurricane Ike hit. My house was damaged but repairable. The Bait Camp, their home and most possessions were gone though, through flood and fire. Dad Norbert stayed through the storm although he had planned to leave. Kara stayed too, in her Galveston loft apartment. After the storm, Norbert started over running a salvage car and towing business nearby the Ferry Landing site, with Kenan helping. Kara had several jobs, settling in Hitchcock for a while, later returning to Bolivar.

Two years ago, she met Chance Kraft at the Lutheran Church’s Octoberfest in Galveston. Chance going through a divorce, was pretty glum until Kara’s smile changed his life, and hers forever. It didn’t take long before they both realized how happy they were and that they really belonged together. This year, they were married on the Elissa, with her Dad, Mom, both brothers and sister Kristi, cousins, co-workers, his friends and hers, celebrating their well-deserved happy ending – and new beginning. It was an absolutely wonderful wedding and their story and happiness, too sweet not to share.

Best wishes always – from me and your Bolivar friends,
Darlene Nelsen (10-28-2013)
