Living at the Seashore

GO’s Sand Bucket By Georgia Osten
I’ve decided to resume strolling on the beach again. I say again, maybe it’s been 10 or so years ago. It’s been since our beach became more crowded and popular. We’ve always taken our Maezy Fur Baby down twice a day, but this is different. Well, first of all, on one of our Maezy trips, I began casually looking for sharks teeth. Well, lo and behold, I found my first the other day. Now, every time I go to the beach, I’m looking for more sharks teeth, I’ve found two in 74 years. I’m not through looking, just so you know.

The other day, on one of my more serious strolls, I found a few interesting shells. I brought them home to show my husband and we both got a big laugh from my bounty.

You see, a long time ago, when my in-laws owned BayVue Grocery, my mother-in-law had a Shell Shop. It was beautifully displayed in glass cabinets in the back corner of the store, known as Mike’s Shell Shop. These shells came from all over the world. She ordered them by the box-fulls to show and sell in her shop. When they decided to sell BayVue, my mother-in-law boxed up all the shells, packed them in crates and brought them home to store at their beach-front house on “Fisherman’s Cove.”

Long story, short, along came a major storm (not Ike), but one almost as angry. The whole ground level of the Seahoose was washed out. Everything washed out to sea.

Years later, strolling beachcombers were finding exotic shells of all sorts. Shells from the West Indies, Portugal, South Africa, you name it.

There’s my story, there’s the humor. No telling where my exotic shells came from. It was kind of funny they were all in a bunch together.

Happy Hunting.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you. Email: [email protected]
