Necklaces for a good cause

There are angels among us. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Susan and Bill Free of Crystal Beach are doing their part to help promote awareness of this disease that takes the lives of so many each year. They team up to make wine-cork necklaces and sell them at craft fairs, local businesses, and Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day events. Susan and Bill have been making their necklaces for 2 years, and have donated over $5000 to Susan G. Komen and MD Anderson Cancer Research (non-profit organizations).

Asked how they got the idea, Susan states, “Everybody has extra corks just sitting around, why not do something with them!” The Frees drill holes through the corks and string them with colored beads to make the unique necklaces. The necklaces are all handmade, no two are alike.

When asked why they are so passionate about this cause, “We have known many males and females who have lost the battle to breast cancer and others who are in remission.”

Necklaces are available for purchase locally at Tropical Accents and Latitude 29, or you can drop by the courthouse in Crystal Beach and see Susan, as she “always has a bag in my car.”
