“Spring” Into Fishing Action on Bolivar Peninsula

By Capt. David Harris
By the time Spring gets here we’ve all jumped the gun at least 3 or 4 times, when a few warm days greet us and we think it’s time to exchange the long pants and thermals for shorts and breathable waders. But a couple days later we’re digging out the thermals to wear under the breathable waders so we can try and break cabin fever. Deer season has been over for 30 days and if the honey-do list isn’t finished yet the rest can wait for a rainy day. “Lets Fish” Bolivar has it’s hot spots and not so hot spots – is there really a hot spot anywhere or is it more knowing when to be where on what tide. When you’re stuck to walk in fishing, the time of year has to do with it, but maybe tide movement needs to be watched more carefully at certain times of year. I’ve been blessed with always having a boat to fish out of, but even I like to walk in and change the pace and style a little.

Well, it’s the middle of February and we have a couple good days of wind and the air temperature is topping 63 degrees. If I was a walk in person, or for that matter a person with a boat, I think I would have to head to the refuge shoreline. Sometimes it may not be the fast action everyone is looking for but it can be nice action with some good sized fish and without a lot of traffic. If you just want an easy fishing trip, Rollover Pass can produce a mixed bag of Reds and Black Drum and you can sit in a chair most of the time and relax.

Now we’re coming into the first of March and the water is closing in on 65 degrees. With the right tide and maybe some lights for night fishing Rollover Pass – I really think it’s a hidden secret. I hear and see some nice big fat trout come from Rollover every year. It’s gonna be a job, and don’t think you’ll see it in any fishing reports, it’s a hush-hush or mums the word for the locals. It happens every year from around the first of March and throughout the summer – big trout at Rollover Pass. Take some time, watch the crowd, and cover both sides. When the water color is right and tides are moving, you can’t beat Rollover Pass.

With bait camps within walking distance to the water, easy parking, and plenty of room, it’s a place the hardcore fish and reel in their trophy Trout or Redfish. It’s a place the family can spend the day and kids can run free. Many spend the weekend in one spot enjoying the outdoors and fishing. As always, be courteous to your fellow fishermen and pick up your trash so the next family can enjoy a clean spot.
