Superstitions

By Georgia Osten
There are a few typical superstitions to Southerners. Around here, we all believe that black eyed peas are a must for our New Years Day dinner. I’m cooking mine as we speak. I thought I had a package in my pantry but was sadly mistaken. I went to The Big Store on Friday to find my favorite brand, Camelia, no luck. Are you kidding me? Long story short, my husband and I went to Kroger after church on Sunday and found “fresh” black eyed peas, that’ll do!

Here’s something you shouldn’t do on New Years Day – LAUNDRY! Well, heck, wish I’d known, I’ve done 4 loads already today! Here’s another one – DON’T SWEEP. Laundry and sweeping are believed to wash & sweep away good luck.

General cleaning is a basic “No-No.” On Saturday, thank goodness, I spent the entire day cleaning the tops of the cabinets in the kitchen. You know, the grimy ones that require two to three times over and over with 409. Up and down the ladder, I’d hate to be stuck doing that chore every day of the year.

Don’t forget to make your New Year’s Resolution. Go easy on yourself, you’ll feel great about your accomplishments.

We’ve always eaten cabbage on New Year’s Day, it’s a European tradition signifying “green stuff” like making more money. Now that I know exactly what it signifies, maybe I should go buy a lottery ticket??

I don’t know about you, but I have plenty of superstitions, you don’t need to hear them all, they might stick.

Enjoy the fireworks around town, celebrate, have fun! Thanks for sticking with Crystal Beach Local News for the whole year.

Happy 2024!
