Superstitions

By Georgia Osten
I guess it’s not too difficult to imagine that I would be very superstitious. Growing up with parents and a grandmother all born and raised in the deep south, we had plenty of superstitions going around. Don’t get me wrong, we weren’t witches or anything, at least I don’t think we were/are. One superstition that comes to mind, most recently, is “whatever you do on New Year’s Day, you’ll be doing for the rest of the year.” An Unwelcome “doing for the rest of the year” is vacuuming … yep, as I pulled out that vacuum on January 1st, the thought came to mind, “I’ll be doing this every day now.” But I couldn’t help myself. We had the family down and we had been on the beach the night before shooting fireworks. Everyone came in with their sandy shoes, jackets, the cooler – all that “sandy” stuff. On the other hand, a Welcome “doing for the rest of the year” is having the family with us on New Year’s Day means we’ll have them with us the rest of the year. Not that they’ll be living with us, but maybe we’ll see them more in 2013.

Other superstitions I grew up with:
1) whichever door you walk through to enter the house, leave from the same door.
2) the ladder, the cracks, the lines … all a given.
3) don’t place a pair of shoes on a table (I don’t remember why)
4) don’t drink milk with fish
Please send me some of yours.

Oh, and by the way, I’ve been vacuuming every day since New Year’s Day. I just leave the vacuum out now. It lives next to the dining room table.

Happy New Year!
