The Wild Kingdom (Part 2)

GO’s Sand Bucket
by Georgia Osten
Do you know how there are still some dilapidated Ike-torn houses still standing here and there? Well, we happen to have one right in front of our house. We’ve gotten used to it because we love the owner who insists he will, one day, be able to rebuild his cabin. His father lovingly built it for the family many years ago and it stood strongly against the storm. Well, most of it stood strongly. Actually the whole front of the house, stairs included, fell off and floated away, leaving a gaping front of the house exposed to the elements. The house has been haphazardly boarded up, but a window is broken out on the side allowing the curtains to blow in and out, nails fall out randomly, sheet rock crumbles and insulation blows over to the other houses. From our side, we can see into the master bedroom, the closet is ajar and the beveled mirror still hangs on the wall. Every afternoon at about 3:00, the family returns home. The big fuzzy mom and dad raccoons first, then the babies. Each take their turn crossing the street from the slough, then stealthily climb the front corner piling and enter through the front of the house under a gap in the plywood. I like to imagine I can see them having dinner, getting ready for bed and peering out the window to see if I’m still being nosy. Ah neighbors…

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
