Along for the Ride

Many years ago, RR and I took off with my Dad to Boerne to look at some farm implements that were for sale at an auction. Daddy was driving as he knew where we were going, the two men in the front seat and me in the back of Mom’s station wagon. The quickest way to Boerne from Blanco is down Hwy 281 to Hwy 46 and that is the best road too, so off we go. Now you also need to know my Daddy never drove with his eyes on the road or his hands on the wheel. You just got used to it and pointed when something was coming our way. We found the place, made our purchases and enjoyed lunch in downtown Boerne.

Daddy had a rule, never come home the same way you went. So Daddy takes off from the café through the middle of Boerne and hooks a right on CR473. Where are we going Daddy? “Home, just taking the scenic way,” he said, then, “Oh No.” Long-Story-Short, it was a switch back road if there ever was one. Devil’s Backbone Road has nothing on CR473. For years, the family has laughed about this trip we took, and I must be honest, there have been a few other road trips with that man that I could write about.

As I have reported before, my sister and I are getting ready for a road trip to Tombstone. Since she does not have a dot.com machine (computer), I am doing all the map quest. The first part of getting on the road for us is getting to I-10. Map Quest suggests going up through Fredericksburg. My nephew suggested we go down to Boerne to get on I-10. Of course, Dolores, and I started laughing at his comment and I reminded her of CR 473. Later in the day, while I was searching the web for the quickest way to I-10, the dot.com machine comes up with Blanco to Comfort on I-10.

THE SKIES ARE ROLLING AT THIS POINT – I could hear Daddy laughing so hard. You see Blanco to Comfort is CR473! Guess Daddy will be on part of this trip with my sister and me after all.
