First Hole Double Bogey Drops Buchanan to Second Place

By Mike VanZandt
After an hour of practicing his chipping and putting Thursday afternoon, David Buchanan felt confident when he teed it up on the first hole of the Par 3 Turquoise Course. A three putt double bogey quickly brought him back to earth and proved to be the difference between his score and the eventual winners. Michael Comeaux hit his tee shot three feet from the first cup and calmly rolled in the birdie putt that secured him the only skin of the afternoon. Tied for first place with Comeaux at four over par was the old Dabbler himself, Dabney Harrison, who never hit a green in regulation but got up and down for par five times with his artful chipping. Shannon O’Brien, who is rumored to be buying his lovely daughter Holly a new Beemer for Christmas with his golf winnings this year at the Ranch, had the most interesting shot of the day. Teeing off from 86 yards, O’Brien shanked a wedge onto the patio overlooking the second green. His Titleist 1 rattled around the furniture before bouncing an improbable thirty feet toward the green. Unfortunately, Shannon chili dipped his approach shot and three putted for the first of two double bogeys in his 9 hole round and a 34 that put him in last place. Next to last was Mike VanZandt, who had four bogeys and one double for a sloppy six over par 33.

The long running Sunday scramble at the Ranch tees off at 11:00 a.m. while the Tuesday/Thursday Par 3 contests start at 3:00 p.m. The threat of inclement weather forced the second postponement of the Tiki Beach Bar and Grill annual tournament until January. (2013-12-12)
