Houston Audubon High Island Sanctuaries Open House

Birdwatchers from all over the world come to Houston Audubon’s High Island sanctuaries, and High Island is often on the list of the top birding sites in the U.S. But many residents of the Upper Texas Coast have never been there. Houston Audubon invites you, your family, and friends to a High Island sanctuary Open House, Saturday April 5, 2014, when admission will be free for all visitors.

Do you wonder what there is to see in the sanctuaries? You may see tired migrating birds that have just crossed the Gulf of Mexico, nesting herons, egrets and spoonbills turning their eggs in the Rookery, gators patrolling the ponds watching for careless birds or turtles climbing out of the ponds laying their eggs on the trails. In Smith Oaks Sanctuary you can walk under 100+ year old live oaks and wander through what is left of the Smith Homestead, where they even had a greenhouse.

The sanctuaries are open dawn to dusk but if you visit between 9am and 4pm, there will be helpful volunteers stationed around the sanctuaries to enhance your visit. Free bird walks with professional tour guides are scheduled at 8am at Boy Scout Woods and at 4pm at Smith Oaks Sanctuary.

When you plan your trip to the High Island Open House, make sure to schedule a stop at St Mathew’s Methodist Church for lunch. The church sells barbecue lunches every Saturday in April from 11am until the food runs out and they make delicious barbecue.
