Open bunkers and “Pirates and Petticoats” highlight 4th Annual Jane Long Festival

An exciting line-up of activities, entertainment and vendors will make the free 2013 Fourth Annual Jane Long Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12, the best one ever, with Bolivar Peninsula’s Fort Travis Seashore Park historic bunker and battery re-opened for tours and expected to draw Texas history buffs from across the state. The treasured bunker and battery will be open 11:00 am to 4:30 pm, and complimented by the highly anticipated return of “Pirates and Petticoats”, the delightful play presented by the Way Off Broadway players at 1:30 pm. A play area and activities for children are planned. As always, admission is free, parking is free, food vendors will abound. Just do bring your own lawn chairs!

[Jane Long Commemorative Flags, 3′ X 5′, can be

The full array of dancers, historical booths, food, fun items and artistic vendors will again be present along with an expanded silent auction and raffle.

A delightful expansion on the “Pirates and Petticoats” play this year is Bruce Haire’s take on Shouter (aka Nat ‘King’ Cole), the Greek chorus-style guitarist in “Cat Ballou.” Bruce’s new “Ballad of Jane Long” is a tribute to his incredible talent.

Producer/Director Linda Elissalde appears as the narrator. The cast also includes 3 Way Switch, Debbie Hannagriff, Sherry Morgan, Anne Willis, Larry Flanagan, Marty Boddie, Brenda Hughes, Mary Raney, Fran Griffin, Brenda McDonald, Dr. Melanie Wallace, Raquel Silverberg, Sid Bouse, Bill Silverberg, Nathan Foreman, Betty Williamson, Mary Hernandez, Crystal Wood, Amber Sandlin, Diane Lewis, Brenda Beust Smith, Tom Hughes, George Strong and Margo Johnson. Ellen Kennedy is Stage Director, with Marcel Elissalde and Mac McDonald as crew. The pirate ship is provided by Larry Flanagan.

Yet another highlight: pictures of the newly designated Jane Long Oleander will be displayed at the Festival. Names and emails will be taken of those interested in being informed when this exciting new flower, being propagated now by the International Oleander Society (www.oleander.org), will be available for purchase.
