Our cancelled trip

By Georgia Osten
Well, we weren’t planning to be here at the beach the whole month of February. My husband and I were to drive to North Carolina last Thursday, a little road trip indeed! The road trip was intended so I could take my 3 month old Christmas present with me for the month-long stay. Little Maezy was going on her first long trip. I was a little worried because Maezy thinks she should ride in my lap while I drive or on the console between the front seats. Easy enough right now because she’s only 20 pounds, but what happens when she’s full grown at 80-90 pounds or so?? Needless to say, my husband was NOT looking forward to the trip. I had the suitcases out on the bed for a few weeks, adding things as I thought of them, a pile of stuff in the closet that would have to be loaded into the car in a few days.

Sitting on the sofa last Tuesday evening, I received a message on my cell phone with a picture of my son-in-law sitting on the carpet with my grandson and granddaughter and the family dog, Texas, with the note “surprise.” C’mon, I’m wondering, studying the picture, “what’s going on?” He is in Afghanistan. The kids look recent, it can’t be an old picture, I recognize those jammies from a month ago when they were here. I write back, a bit sarcastically, “nice surprise.” Is this a joke? Then the rest of the recipients of the message, began writing back “WHAT?”

Finally, I picked up the phone and actually called my daughter in North Carolina – “what’s going on,” I ask.
Mom, he just came home, he left Afghanistan 3 days ago, he told me he would be traveling and we couldn’t communicate for a few days. He took a cab home and simply knocked on the door. He was actually home 3 months early!

So many prayers answered – prayers work, by the way…one way or another. My son-in-law is home safe, he’s back with his family, their family is ONE unit again. God is Good.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
