VanZandt Smokes Par 3 Irregulars By 3 Shots; O’Brien Sets Par 3 Gold-Course Record

On the last Thursday of September on the Blue Par-3 course at the Ranch, Mike VanZandt slopped his way to a five over par 32 that was good enough to beat the field by a whopping three shots. Six golfers signed for 8 over par 35’s, including the big three heavy money winners Shannon O’Brien,John Milby, and Michael Comeaux. Joining the Big 3 at 35 were Robin Giddens, Executive Course Superintendent Mike Mitchell, and David Buchanan. Dabney Harrison took 36 strokes, insuring his “B” player status for the upcoming Golf Course benefit tourney on October 5th. Tye Badon and Paul Williams finished 10 over par and former Par 3 winner Larry Johnson ballooned to a 39.

Mike VanZandt and Executive Course Superintendent Mike Mitchell reset the tees on the Par 3 Gold Course Tuesday at the Ranch following the torrential rains. With the shortest hole only 77 yards and the longest 122, VanZandt told Mitchell that we might see a course record in the afternoon Par three tournament. Sure enough, Shannon O’Brien roasted the new layout with two birdies, six pars, and a missed three-foot-putt bogey to better the old course record by a whopping two shots. Paul Williams birdied the first hole for a skin and Mike Mitchell skinned number 3 with a nice 15 foot putt from the fringe to cut into O’Brien’s cash. O’Brien, heavy favorite to win the golf course benefit Saturday, is going to need quite a few sheckles to buy a share of his team in the Calcutta Friday night.
