Family Dollar gets off to a big start
By Brenda Cannon Henley

You could have met any one of a dozen or so neighbors during the first few days of the opening of the new Family Dollar store here on Bolivar.  Folks were apparently thrilled to have this store open for business and hurried in to do Christmas shopping and to look over all of the merchandise.

In speaking with one of the assistant managers on duty, I asked if the store had reached the projections the company had set for it in the opening days.  “Oh, yes,” she said with great gusto. “I think that the store has done even better than the company had perhaps thought it would.  We are thrilled with the reception we have gotten from the people and believe we will be and open for business for a long time to come.”

Meeting one of my own neighbors and friends while shopping, I admired her new shoes. “Right over there,” she said, “is where I got them.  They are so comfortable and I needed a new pair of black flats.”  So, being the shopper that I am, I hurried over to see for myself, and lo and behold, a small yellow and black sign read, “Buy one pair at regular price and get a second pair for half price.”  Before I knew it, two pair had jumped into my bright, clean, red shopping cart.

Crystal Beach resident Charles Carlin was the first customer.

Along with Christmas gifts, wrapping paper, and home essentials, food seemed to be selling well.  I saw several carts loaded with various items to be cooked and snacks to keep the holidays interesting.
