The Best Year Ever for the Driftwood Charity Gumbo Cook Off

gumbo_0The Driftwood 5th Annual Charity Gumbo Cook Off, hosted by Jackie and Brian Sticker, was a big hit as always. So eloquently put by Jackie, “Record Breaking Weather and Record Breaking Contributions.” Fourteen teams started cooking their gumbo specialty early Saturday morning to compete for trophies in Seafood or Chicken and Sausage categories. Some teams entered both. While the aroma filled the air, all present were treated to tastes of each gumbo entry. Bayou Sounds played throughout the day, and bidders were offered a wide selection of Silent Auction items. Michelle & Shawn Landry of Landry Insurance donated a Yeti Cooler as a very popular raffle item, bringing in $680 for the Crystal Beach Fire Department. All the while, a rousing Cornhole tournament was played out – Grand Champions: Gina Kays and Sheryl Choat.

Promptly at 2:30, the gumbo entries were turned in for judging. A total of 16 gumbos were collected. The real task was cut out for the judges upstairs at the Sticker house. Judges Billy Shipp, and Jeanette & Brett Floyd sampled each entry and selected the top two in each category. And since younger taste buds may be different, Logan Gibson and Mamie Grace Cavness selected a Kid’s Choice Award. Thanks to all participants and contributors, the teams, friends, family and neighbors that made this beautiful day a true success – The Best Year Ever!
