The trip that was not meant to be

The Prengers were headed to their 60th High School Reunion…or so they thought. Ed and Barbara Prenger of Port Bolivar were planning to attend Barbara’s reunion to Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama. It was going to be quite a relaxing adventure on the wide open water. It would take approximately 7 days each way, cruising at day along the Intracoastal Waterway to Mobile, and sleeping at night. They were setting off from Crystal Beach aboard a 48 foot trawler boat named “Lindsey”, owned and operated by Captain Pat Johnson, a retired airline pilot from Coldspring, TX. Captain Johnson is a veteran seaman with years of sailing experience, but traded his sailboat for the Lindsey last November. Captain Johnson and his travelers departed on Thursday morning at 7am fully stocked with fuel, water and groceries. Ed, having owned and operated a restaurant for 27 years, was to be the chef for the trip and Barbara was the designated dishwasher and housekeeper. But the trip that was not meant to be came to an end just 10 miles past the High Island bridge. The heat was so intense that one passenger almost had a heat stroke. The decision was made by the captain to return to Crystal Beach. They will now have to eat all the groceries they bought and dream about the trip. But at least they have a great story for the next reunion!
