Trolley time

Yesterday RR and I spent the day riding trolleys. Savannah has several sightseeing companies that use trolleys to take people all over the historic district of the town. On our trolley tour, there were fifteen stops where you could get on and off at any time. We arrived at the station for the 9 am trolley and decided to take the entire trip, checking out the areas as we went. Then, plan our stops and places to see on the second go around. Each trolley driver has a story to tell along the way about the history of the town. You see, there are 21 squares in Savannah and each square is named after someone or something that is significant in history. There were 23 squares, but two are federal buildings now. Not smart – government people. Each time we got on and off a trolley we met a new driver. These are very special people. They must like people. They love to talk at the same time as dodging cars. Not me! I left out stopping quickly, avoiding hitting all the tourists that are walking out in front of them. Each driver has a different spin on their city and its history. I loved that the story of the town can be told in so many ways with the same meaning.

There are two sections of town – the first is Old Town starting in 1733 and then the Victorian sections. My favorite was the dueling park that was next to the old cemetery and across from the church. Each driver put a different spin on that one.

There is a stop for the City Market. In the past, this was where you purchased all your food, such as vegetables, eggs, meat and so on. Now it is several blocks of shops, pubs and fine dining. We enjoyed all the shops and pubs. Back on the trolley to the next stop.

We toured houses and churches and parks, never having to fight traffic or people. Our last driver has been doing his job for nine years and still enjoys every day. That is the kind of people you meet in this lovely town. We hopped off the last trolley at five to head out of Savannah just in time for Friday night traffic.
