Bolivar Lighthouse History & Tour

President Amy Maxwell-Chase of the Bolivar Point Lighthouse Foundation hosted a group of 30 from the U.S. Lighthouse Society on Saturday. They toured the Lighthouse and learned more about the history of the lighthouse from Amy and several members of the Maxwell family. The Lighthouse was built in 1872 and later abandoned in 1933. During the storm of 1915, Amy’s Great Grandmother was the last of 120 people to make it to safety inside the lighthouse. If not for the lighthouse, the Maxwell family would not exist. The original houses were washed away in the storm, the current houses were built in 1916. The Maxwell family purchased the lighthouse property from the US government in 1947 for $5,500.

The Bolivar Point Lighthouse Foundation is a non-profit that was created in 2015, continuing to raise funds to restore the lighthouse that celebrated its 150 year anniversary this year. The restoration costs are estimated at $2.5 million. Gaining recognition for the Bolivar Point Lighthouse, the U.S. Lighthouse Society stopped by on their 14 day Texas-Mexico tour, planning to visit 30 lighthouses beginning in San Antonio and ending in Cancun.
