Tide Report-Rollover Pass

Rollover Pass Fishing Report, May 26-June 1, 2014

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
WEEDS, especially of the sargassum variety, are causing severe problems at the pass and along our coastal shores, BUT there is absolutely NOTHING we can do about it! Somehow the anglers are working around this irritation and catching fish. The fish ARE still there under the weed mats but are hard to catch. All we can do is fish when the

Summer is almost here and along with it comes improved fishing and crabbing. The stones have been amazing with huge claws to 7 inches and the blues are showing up to 6 inches point to point. The specks are finally in the surf hitting plastics and live baits. Big shark are also making the shark anglers happy and the surf-waders

Last week (hopefully) breathed its last “chill” spell on our waters. With the warmth and humidity replacing the record breaking chill offs, the fishing action for Rollover and the surf should normalize. As of this writing, the specks, reds, and flounder were finding their way into anglers creels.

Rollover Pass Fishing Report, May 5 – May 11, 2014

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
The beginning of last week the reds, specks, flounder, and drum were loading angler coolers. But then huge mats of sargassum weed moved in to stunt the fishing action. As of this writing, the weeds are still a problem. The trout, reds, flounder, and drum are still there BUT anglers can’t get at them due to the heavy weed banks. We don’t know when

Rollover Pass Fishing Report, Apr 28 – May 4, 2014

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Warming waters and great weather should get our fishing action back in order. The Gulf shrimp haven’t showed up as yet but when they do the fishing action at the pass will be HOT!! Finger mullet, shad, bait croaker, and mud minnows are now in the cut with the expected shrimp run coming soon. Meanwhile, just set yourself down and

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly again explains this past week’s fishing activity. Great speck action was actively hooking anglers up to trout from 20 to 32 inches with most being oversized and releasable. Some really nice slot and bull reds were caught with some nice slot and bull drum as well. But the “Olde Saying” at the pass is one day heroes and

Warming waters and baitfish are helping to improve the fishing action at Rollover Pass. Day-shift anglers are loading up on drum and whiting with a few sheepshead, flounder, and redfish in their boxes. Night-shift anglers are catching specks on the eve of the sunsets and on the early morning tides. The specks aren’t in the surf as yet but it won’t be much longer.

Spring came to Rollover for a short time. During this period of sun and active fishing the BIG TROUT came to play, flounder provided numerous dinners, behemoth black drum snapped lines, broke rods taking some with them, and the bull redfish planted plenty of smiles on anglers faces. BUT what Mother Nature giveth she can also taketh away. With YET

Rollover Pass Fishing Report, Mar 31 – Apr 6, 2014

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
After we get through this extended winterization, the fishing at the pass should be GREAT!! The specks are showing up in numbers now with schoolies and mega specks from 2 to 8 plus lbs coming in. The black drum are running with anglers catching plenty of keeper eaters along with some MONSTERS going to 40 plus lbs. The spring flounder run

Rollover Pass Fishing Report, Mar 24 – Mar 30, 2014

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Fishing action at Rollover Pass is beginning to warm up with the water; night-fishing and day time anglers are boxing specks, sand trout, reds, drum, and flounder. A weeks worth of sunny skies with baitfish and shrimp migrating through the pass should do it-TICK, TICK, TICK!!

Rollover Pass Fishing Report, Mar 17 – Mar 23, 2014

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Extended warm spell helped the fishing action with anglers catching speckled trout, flounder, pompano, drum, redfish, and sheepshead, but Sunday’s cold-front with north winds and rain may cool the bite somewhat. Hopefully, the front won’t chill the waters too much and the bite will pick back up on Wednesday. On the Galveston Bay fuel spill,

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Hopefully the chill of winter is about over. If so, the fishing action at Rollover will hopefully heat up with the Springtime temps. As of Sunday the 16th, a few reds were nibbling baits with some real bruisers collecting fishing rods and snapping lines along the way. It has been reported that around 10 to 12 fishing rigs were yanked into the pass by bull reds and

Rollover Pass Fishing Report, Mar 3 – Mar 9, 2014

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
This past week provided the good, the bad, and the ugly fishing action due to being locked into an unusually cold winter. But with a little more patience by anglers, the weather will eventually break into the “Texas Friendly” we are all used to. Despite the negatives, the anglers were able to land a few nice fish for their

Water temp fluctuations are playing havoc with Rollover’s fishing action. On upswings to the 60’s, the bite is good for reds, drum, and flounder; but on the downswing to the 40’s, it is strictly pot luck. The Specks must have previously known this was about to happen, because they have completely disappeared. All we can hope for is sunny skies

This Crazy winter weather fluctuating from icy to humid to icy again is throwing the fishing action off. Good days and bad days are being had by angler, but when good the bull reds and drum are cooperating with great catches coming in. Small male flounder are moving back into the bay. NO REPORT ON TROUT ACTION as of yet. Water temp

Rollover Pass Fishing Report, Feb 10 – Feb 16, 2014

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Water temp started out at 42 degess and slowly rose to the 56 degree mark. If the weather allows, the magic temp of 60 should be realized by Monday or Tuesday. When this happens, the fish will come out of their doldrums and start to feed, so have patience anglers, the trout will be here soon along with the reds, drum, and flounder- TICK, TICK, TICK!!

Even though very few fish were caught this past week due to frigid conditions, it is all starting to come together folks. All we need now is a stretch of warm weather to get all the fish and bait to start their cycles. All the fish you see on this report were caught on Sunday (Feb 9). Shad and shrimp are beginning to run and winter male flounder are

Ice Age storms and arctic winds chilled bay waters, putting fishing action on hold. The bite has been sporadic with warming trends providing a few catches for anglers with ice-berg fronts freezing the bite for un-nipped baits. The fish photo page shows off the few catches anglers managed to land from January freeze outs until now. Fortunately, we are nearing

Fishing Report For Dec 16 through Dec 22, 2013

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
This past week had its ups and downs with the weather and the often finicky fish. When we thought they would, they wouldn’t. It just goes to show you that the fish have their own agenda for their actions or non-actions. The flounder run is all but over but still seeing some stragglers coming through. The Bull Redfish and Drum are very active on the Gulf side

Fishing Report For Dec 9 through Dec 15, 2013

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
This past week saw multiple cold fronts chill Rollover’s waters to the extreme, numbing the fish and anglers alike. Very few quality fish were caught due to the fact that they just didn’t have time to recover. The saddle blanket flounder didn’t make a move through the pass and are probably buried deep in the mud. I’ll do one more weekly report,

Fishing Report For Dec 2 through Dec 8, 2013

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Back to back cold fronts and chilly north winds stunned the fishing at the Pass. But prior to all this wintry stuff, the flounder bite was “kickin” with 14 to 26 inch flatfish coming in. Don’t really know what’s going to happen after this weeks cold spell. Only time will tell, but it may initiate my final fishing report for this year. Will let you know on the

Flounder Limit Goes Back To Five Per Day. The often discussed and fussed about 2 flounder per day limit for November is OVER, and the long awaited return to five flounder per day is BACK! This past week provided a mix of good and bad for flounder anglers as this past CHILL DOWN really stunned the flatfish, AND its anglers. Angler

The Gilchrist Community Association wishes our visitors a very filling Thanksgiving Holiday and a NO PARKING FEES on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov 28). So after you’ve feasted on Turkey and pumpkin pie, pack up your family and enjoy a day of fishing here at Rollover Pass. This past week had its ups and downs on the flounder and redfish bite

Fishing Report For Nov 11 through Nov 17, 2013

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Previous week provided both good and bad weather conditions with the good activating the flounder run and the bad stalling the run. But that’s how it goes folks. We need those chill downs to get the flounder off their beds and through the cut. This last front managed to get a few of the larger females moving and with this next front due

Fishing Report For Nov 5 through Nov 11, 2013

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Steady flounder action most of the week with the larger females beginning to run through the pass. Redfish have been good all week with plenty of slots and Bulls keeping the anglers happy. Sheepshead are beginning to show up in numbers and the Black Drum are plentiful with both legal keeper eaters and Bulls. This next week should

Fishing Report For Oct 28 through Nov 4, 2013

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
After two days of wind and rain and two days of freshwater runoffs, the pass was sluggish in its offerings, but still produced for day-shift and night-shift anglers when the tides were right. Good flounder to 6 lbs and specks to 5 lbs were caught and boxed. The redfish also kept anglers busy on both the Gulf side and the bay side. The larger female

Fishing Report For Oct 21 through Oct 27, 2013

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
This past week offered great fishing for some but slow fishing for others. Boaters and Bay-waders enjoyed great flounder action with many limits being caught and boxed. Bulkhead anglers experienced good and bad days as smaller male flounder were still the mainstay catches with a few larger females being caught. It is going to take a cold front
