Christmas Names

By Georgia Osten
I came home from work today with nothing on my mind but wrapping presents. As I head to the back room for the wrapping paper and some ribbon, I happen to pass the laundry room and take a detour to see if those clothes I put in the dryer this morning are dry. They’re not, so I start the dryer again. Before I leave the laundry room, I check the extra fridge we have in there to see if I need to make room for the stuff I need to buy for Christmas dinner. Oh my goodness, this refrigerator is a mess, way too much going on in there! By the time I’ve removed all the expired jars and bottles, I realize how dirty the shelves are. I march into the kitchen to grab the 409 and a dishcloth. When I get in the kitchen, I think I might as well check out this refrigerator. Yep, just as I suspected, lots to throw out and more dirty shelves. I filled up the garbage can so I had to take it downstairs. While I was downstairs, I realized there were a few weeds worthy of being plucked and some of the plants needed watering. Back upstairs, and thought I’d check on the dryer, everything was dry so I proceeded to fold and put all away. Finally, time to wrap some presents. Then, my sister-in-law stopped by, we all sat/stood around the island having a cocktail, talked and everyone helped me wrap presents.

Have I told you that ever since the kids were little, we’ve made up names for each. Too many times we’d catch them rummaging through the presents to see if they could spot their own. Some years, there’s a theme, like Nemo or Cars, a long time ago, it was Star Wars. You know, Princess Lea, Luke Skywalker, Chewy, R2D2. This year, we have no theme – Cinderella, Bullwinkle, Lightning McQueen, Belle, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Sweet Pea, Tow-Mater and Bruce, etc. We’ve only assigned one name to each person to make it easier on the 3 & 5 year olds. Another tradition.

Hopefully, when PawPaw and I are gone, they’ll continue the fun. Even funnier, is when Grandma gets the names mixed up, which has happened too many years to mention. What a wonderful, magic time of year. Wishing you all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!! (2013-12-17)

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
