Comeaux Shakes Off Career High 40 to Win Club Championship

By Mike VanZandt
Michael Comeaux fired a 29/30 59 on the 18 hole Par 3 course and a 42 from the white tees on March 29th to edge Shannon O’Brien by one stroke and John Milby and Mike VanZandt by three shots in the first combined championship at the Ranch. Golfers played both Par 3 courses before teeing off from the regular tees in the unique three nine-hole format. O’Brien had scores of 30/34/38, Milby 32/34/38, and VanZandt 27/34/43.

Comeaux, currently a 2 handicap on both the gold and blue Par 3 courses, has been smoking hot the last two weeks, shooting low score four out of the last five Par 3 contests. Interestingly, Comeaux’s resurgence comes just two weeks after shooting a career high 40 from the blue tees only two days before the Port Bolivar Cemetery Benefit Tournament. Shannon O’Brien, a pre-tourney favorite, and Michael Comeaux’s recent bridesmaid on the Par 3 courses, failed to cash at the Port Bolivar Cemetery Tournament, as did others including yours truly, whose team finished next to last.

Golf superintendent and non-teaching golf pro Mike Mitchell has recovered from the flu and has the golf course in great shape. However, his golf game still appears to be suffering. His dreaded rat hook has returned in earnest and it is a joy to behold as it soars in a great left curving arc often fifty yards or more from its intended target. Par 3 contests have been moved to 5:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Sunday scramble starts every Sunday at 11:00.

David Buchanan birdied the third hole at the Ranch Tuesday to secure the only skin of the day. Buchanan’s 25 foot birdie putt, struck with a center shafted putter from Golfsmith purchased earlier the same day for a trifling $39, hit the back of the cup, leapt into the air, and dropped into the hole. Buchanan’s putt was worth $150, double the normal amount for a solo skin because no one won a skin the previous Thursday. It was also the second time Buchanan has won the double skins pot.
