Good Morning Sunshine

As a small child I was always up before anyone in the house. I think you call that a “morning person.” I would get dressed and quietly leave the house, down the stairs, across the alley way to Grandma & Grandpa’s house. Because Grandpa worked in downtown Houston, they too were early risers. I was always welcomed to share their breakfast and walk Grandpa to the bus stop. Monday through Friday Grandpa would walk to the corner of White Oak & Height Blvd. to catch the 6am bus. In the summertime I would walk to the bus stop with him and then skip back to Grandma’s where she would help me with my arithmetic.

As I grew older I remained a morning person. I did my homework in the morning before school. In college, I was lucky enough to have a roommate who enjoyed the morning too. One of the few times I recall not being a morning person was the morning after our wedding. We were staying at the Flagship Hotel, their first year open, and Robbie woke me up and said to me, “Let’s watch the sun come up on the first day of our new Life”. REALLY! I am not sure what my thoughts were at that time but I know for sure it was not, “OK sweetheart”.

As years went by I have always tried to do most of my housework and gardening in the morning. It used to make our two daughters so mad that Mom was so happy in the morning. “It’s time to get up!” Let’s get our little faces washed and get dressed for the day! Even the cat and dog were not too happy with me. To this day neither daughter enjoys gardening in the morning or whishing around with the dust rag. My friend Laura and I worked together from 1979 until 2006. Our boss would tease us about paying for two and getting the work of one. Laura’s brain kicked in about the time mine was falling asleep. We did one heck of a good job together for those 8 to 9 hours.

Even now, Robbie and I enjoy sitting out on the deck in the morning with our coffee to watch the sun come up. As always, as the sun is coming up over the houses closer to the beach, you can hear us singing
“Here comes the Sun, du ‘n du du”
