Important Property Tax Information

GcountyThe second year of February delinquent notices arrived in area mailboxes last week. House Bill 1597, which passed in the last Legislative Session, enables those who are unable to pay their property taxes in full to sign up for a low penalty payment agreement with the tax assessor collector. Additionally, this legislation enabled qualified seniors, disabled persons and disabled vets to pay 7% penalty and interest by March 2nd in order to reinstate their one-quarter installment payments. For those already signed up for quarterly installments, the remaining three coupons and return envelopes will be mailed within the next 10 days. The second installment must be postmarked by March 31st in order to be timely.

According to tax assessor collector Cheryl Johnson, “The 2014 tax year was the smoothest in years thanks in part to a well-trained team and an increase in online payments. We experienced much shorter lines in every office which made it possible for us to place resources where they were most needed. In prior years, many felt the need to pay in person, I believe because they did not trust the mail or our processes. I am hopeful those days are a thing of the past as our race for quality – now a 10 year effort – will never end.”

This was the third year the County Tax Office processed all property tax payments in house – a move that saves approximately $40,000 each year in vendor fees and speeds up mail processing.
