Ring-a-Ding-Ding

By Georgia Osten
That’s how the weekend began. Mary Ann nabs us each year to ring the bell for the Salvation Army at the entrance to The Big Store. We’ve had some years with some really cold mornings, but this past Saturday was pretty mild. Not so mild that the hot chocolate wasn’t needed and enjoyed! You’d be surprised how many folks are out and about that early on a Saturday morning. We always see people we know, I even saw one of my old school buddies, not surprising, this place is like Little Port Arthur.

Our evening was a hoot! The Crystaland Parade, normally held on the 2nd Saturday of December, this year it was the 1st Saturday. What a success, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many vehicles lined up for the event! Santa and Mrs. Claus were there of course. They rode in the Lions Float, drawn by Big Daddy.

We drove the golf cart from our house to the Fire Station that evening. Yes, it was a bit nippy! We checked in at the Fire Station first to get some pictures of the crowds, then we hopped back in the golf cart before the parade to get back to our friend’s bonfire on the beach. This is the first year we’ve been able to watch the parade from the beach. What a treat!

We made it back to the Fire Station in time to see Santa with the children. The Krewe, as usual, did a great job serving hot dogs to the crowds and the President of the Chamber and her husband, the President of the Lions Club, announced the vehicle winners and lighting winners and handed out trophies. It went off without a hitch.

Back to the bonfire for more food and libations. The frivolities were in full force by the time we returned. Oh how I love this Fun-Time group and this community as a whole!

Merry Christmas Y’all!

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you. Email: [email protected]
