This is another “garden story”

Hang up now if you can’t stand to read another. I’m all excited to begin again. My summer garden wasn’t anything to write home about. The tomatoes came in all together in the first two weeks, then diminished to nothing. I’ve planted more, and there are some flowers, but the fruit doesn’t appear. The okra, on the other hand, is driving me crazy, having to pick every day.

Note to self, DO NOT PLANT SO DARN MANY PLANTS!!!

Speaking of fruit, I decided I needed an orchard, so I planted several trees over on the south side of the house, away from the wind. I have 4 fig trees, a navel orange, 2 lemons, a lime and an avocado tree. Needless to say, my husband is not excited to have to mow and weed-whack around all those trees. I keep reminding him how lovely it will be when one day they’re mature, tall and majestic.

I recently bought some fall vegetables to plant in my garden – broccoli, cabbage and an eggplant. I will probably be planting them this weekend. I purchased some asparagus plants from Amazon about a month ago. I bought one-year plants, this means they have another two years to go before we can begin harvesting them. My first purchase of artichokes was a complete bust – I think it was too hot, so I ordered more.

I should have remembered this, but I mistakenly took my not-quite-one-year-old Maezy Golden Retriever out there to plant the new artichokes with me. I only had four of them, so one by one, I lovingly placed them in the holes I dug for them. One by one, Maezy proceeded to dig up each one, shake all the dirt off their precious little roots and sling them somewhere in the yard. I guess I’ll be ordering more from Amazon soon if they allow me to purchase any more.

I’ve learned my lesson, Maezy will NOT be allowed to help me plant ever again!

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
