A Delicacy from the Gulf

In my opinion…Now wait, that’s a silly way to start out my own Sand Bucket – of course, it’s in “my opinion,” otherwise, I wouldn’t be writing it – right? As I was going to say, you can have all the red meat you can find, grill it, broil it, pan fry it, maybe eat it just warmed up, like a friend of mine. I can’t remember how he orders it. Something like, “barely moving?” My choice is something from the Gulf, be it shrimp or crabs.

Every time we have a group of people at the house, at least for one meal, I will be out there catching crabs for our dinner. Wait, sorry, if you’ve read any of my stories, you know I don’t have a knack for actually catching the crabs. You all know where I go for the “catch,” and that’s Joe’s in Bolivar. Speaking of, with all the publicity I give Joe, you’d think he’d throw in a dozen just for the heck of it…Just kidding Joe (he probably doesn’t read my Sand Bucket).

Anyway, I always buy too many crabs – nobody loves them like I do. We had some family/friends over Saturday night and the main item on the menu was crabs. I think, if I had kept cracking them for John, he would have kept eating them, but – what can I say – when that lump came out of the shell, it immediately made it’s way into my mouth.

I called my friends yesterday (all two of them) “Hey, do you want some crabs? They’re cleaned cooked and ready to eat – I’ll deliver.” Only one taker. We had a lot left over and I made a valiant attempt to finish some last night for dinner. Four down and about 2 dozen left. Today, I googled “what to do with left over crabs” – So, I froze them. Chances are, they will not be too tasty when thawed, but I’ll give it a try.

Till next time, next gathering – I’m sure I’ll “catch” the right amount to delight the crowds, and have a few left over when they’ve gone home. Enjoy the bounty which surrounds us.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
