A good ‘ol Cajun festival

Festival Park was rockin’ on Saturday as the 5th Annual Brad & Big Rich’s Cajun Chef’s Cookoff filled the air. The temperature dropped overnight to cool and breezy and before the sun came up on Saturday, seven chef teams started cooking to compete in three categories: Bloody Mary, Gumbo, and Cajun Dish of Choice. The gusty winds made it difficult to keep the cooker flames ablaze, but the excitement within kept the pots boiling. The crowds rolled in around 10 am, purchasing sample cups to taste the entries, ready to vote for their favorite.

The first judging was for the best Bloody Mary. Unfortunately as the judges were about to sample the Bloody Marys, a gust of wind knocked over three of the entries, sending the teams out for a refill to be judged. While folks sampled the gumbo, strolled along vendor row, or relaxed in the beer garden, the live bands played on throughout the day. Meanwhile, twelve teams competed for washer tournament champion. The live auction started around 4 pm with a few unique items like mystery coolers and a catering event for 50 people.

The cook team winners were announced at 4:30pm. Bowed Up Cookers defended their title, and took home the First Place check for $1,000. Dilly, Dilly & Billy won the most votes as People’s Choice. Congratulations to all the winners!

Overall, it was a great day for a cookout on Bolivar Peninsula. Thank you to the generous sponsors and all the volunteers who made this event possible. Proceeds from this event go to the Organ Donor Network, in memory of Rayna Reagan.
