Out With the Old

By Georgia Osten
I wish I had a “before” picture. I can tell you this much. I think we planted two different kinds of jasmine out front around the electric pole probably 10 years ago. Starlight Jasmine and Carolina Jasmine. They were beautiful and smelled divine! I always thought if I could run electricity to the jasmine, I’d decorate it with lights for Christmas, it would have made the most beautiful Christmas Tree!

I texted Jorge yesterday, he’s C4 Landscaping. He always did beautiful work for my neighbors, so I hired him last summer to clean out my flower bed in the front around the stairs. He came again this morning with two others on his team to do major clean up from the freeze we had a Christmas. I dreaded telling him what I wanted. I thought he’d take one look at that mess out front around the pole and get the heck outta here!

Then, I asked him to cut the palm back, “I don’t think it’s dead?” He didn’t either. It’s a Canary Palm and it’s the only one we have left. The other eight Mexican Fan palms died and had to be dug out after the freeze last year.

Jorge came over to my work so I could pay him. He told me he had to climb the pole to get all the stuff off. Bless his Heart! There was nothing living in there this time of year, thank goodness.

With a clean slate, I think I can keep control of this garden now. Oops, that’s what I told him last time. I didn’t lie on purpose, I had every intention of keeping it up. But, I’ve gotta tell you, the way stuff grows around here, it looked kinda scary in there. Who knows what I may have found?

Anyway, here’s a few pics. I asked him to leave the hibiscus, I know a lot of it’s dead, but I WILL tackle it later in February. Famous Last Words!

Mary, Mary, quite contrary
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockleshells
And pretty maids all in a row
