So There I Was

By Georgia Osten
So excited about our new pool, but so afraid to get in with the rickety ladder provided with the pool. I ordered the “Cadillac” of pool stairs, but without the decking it attaches to, it’s still residing in the box. The kids left mid afternoon on Sunday and my husband ventured out to his second home, Crab Festival Park, so I thought I’d give it a try – all my myself.

First things first, I had to find a bathing suit that fits. Last time I wore one (of the three that I own), was probably over two years ago when I used to belong to the Y in League City and I’d go up there once a week to do laps. Of the three, one still fits okay

I grabbed a towel to go around me as I ventured outside to head to the pool. I climbed the rickety ladder, dropping the towel to the foot of the ladder, climbed on up and sat straddled on the top step. No way, no room to pull my leg out from the other side so I simply slid backwards into the pool, dragging my outside leg along with me. You’re right, not too graceful, hopefully no one saw me.

I swam around enjoying the refreshing feel, floated on my back, thought about swimming underwater, but couldn’t open my eyes with my contacts in, so I grabbed one of our new floaty things. I guided myself with the noodle and went all over the pool.

I was preparing myself for my departure from the pool over the rickety ladder when my husband drove up and right behind him, his friend. Oh dear! Here they were to measure for the decking, so I was stuck in the pool, just idly floating around, not about to get out in my ill-fitting bathing suit, and the thought of exiting the pool over that ladder was out of the question. The clouds were gathering and turning blacker, I thought I heard thunder, Oh dear!

They finally left, and I figured I could try to make my exit. Venturing up the ladder on the pool side, I got to the top step, stepped over to the outside wrung with one foot and brought my other foot across on that step to make it down the other side, grabbed my towel and made landfall safely. Whew!

I must admit, my husband joined me later with the other floaty. The floaties have a place for a beverage, so he brought two Coronas with him. What else were we expected to do??
