Thanksgiving, what does that bring to mind for you?

By Georgia Osten
We live in a country where every November we begin planning for our turkey dinner, complete with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy and probably some weird concoction our mothers used to make. It’s all tradition, it’s all about what’s been handed down for generations, including the plates we eat off of. Mine are a lovely set my Granny bought in Canada over a 100 years ago.

I’ll never forget the first time I brought my “boyfriend” home to Mom and Granny’s house for Thanksgiving. He, being the only male around, and my Mom being very traditional, asked him to carve the turkey she had prepared. He begins taking the legs off, the wings, and cutting away at “the bird,” when all of a sudden the bag filled with neck, heart and liver fall out of the rear of the turkey … poor embarrassed turkey. I was a bit embarrassed too, but, oh well, that was my Mom – “Coulda Knit a Sweater Dottie” (that’s another story).

We began another tradition a few years ago. Sorry to say, but I think we’ve missed at least two years of holidays with one of our son-in-laws. Thank goodness he’s within mailing distance – Afghanistan! Last year we sent him a Pecan Pie from Goode Company, one of his favorites. Upon receiving his pie, our son-in-law went to his tent and ate the whole thing! This year, he took the pie into his tent and had a big fat slice, savoring every morsel. The spirit of sharing hit him (maybe he remembered the belly ache last year), he took the rest into the barracks for the rest of the soldiers who devoured the entire pie. I guess we should’ve sent 3 or 4, right?

No matter where you spent Thanksgiving, we hope you enjoyed a bit of home. To our son-in-law, we love you, we miss you, we appreciate you, we pray for you, God Bless You, Be Safe.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
