Dedication of historical monument

The Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation and The Jane Long Society have been waiting a long time for this day. On October 13, to kick off the opening of the Jane Long Festival, the Cultural Foundation will dedicate a memorial to the “Mother of Texas”, Jane Long. This memorial, made possible by a generous donation from Samson Energy (see story) will commemorate Jane Long’s struggles on Bolivar in the brutal winter of 1821, and pay tribute to the spirit of the people of Bolivar in their struggle to return after the devastation of Hurricane Ike.

The dedication ceremony will start at 10:00 am at the entrance to Fort Travis.

The Jane Long Society’s mission is to keep that spirit of survival alive and to also bring attention to Fort Travis which itself suffered severe damage to the historic bunkers and other fortifications during Hurricane Ike.

On September 18, the Galveston County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to adopt a resolution naming a portion of State Highway 87 as Jane Long Memorial Highway. The portion of the roadway to be named Jane Long Memorial Highway extends from the ferry landing to the intersection of Highway 124.
